Greater H1N1 Risk For Your School Age Children

It was recently reported that a vaccine for H1N1 (swine flu) may be available as early as October or November However, the bad news is that flu season usually begins in early September when school resumes. This means that your school age children may be exposed to the H1N1 before a vaccine is available. So what are the risks and what can you do now to protect your school age children?

School age children that have certain diseases, are faced with an increased risk for complications or even death if they get the H1N1 virus These high risk diseases include; frequent chest colds, asthma, Copd, emphysema, and other respiratory conditions. Sometimes, school age children can have a very mild case of asthma even though they’ve never had an asthma attack. When this occurs, swine flu can be an extremely hazardous situation. If your child has any of the diseases listed above, you should call your physician immediately and talk about precautions that you and your school age children should take regarding the H1N1 virus before they go back to school.

In the event of an outbreak of H1N1 and one of your school age children has a lung condition like asthma, your son or daughter will be at risk for serious complications or even death. It is well documented that those who suffer from asthma have a significantly greater risk of getting severe complications than others.

In fact, about 41% of individuals hospitalized in New York suffered from asthma. And not too long ago, seven deaths relating to swine flu were reported in New York. Out of those 7 deaths, six of the individuals had asthma. If you are concerned about your school age children with asthma, you should call your doctor and see if he recommends that you take any special precautions regarding the your children and swine flu even if there is no flu in the area where you live.

H1N1 is a virus that induces influenza in humans. The virus has gone thru a mutation into its present form. Due to this recent mutation, we have no immunity to the disease. This is the reason that governments worldwide are concerned regarding the possibility of a pandemic.

Like the typical seasonal flu, severe illnesses and death has happened as a consequence of sickness related to this serious disease. Just in the U.S., nearly thirty-six thousandindividuals die yearly from flu related complications.

If you are concerned about your school age children, protecting your family, or have one of the special risk factors listed above, do some swine flu preparation now. Do what is necessary to guard yourself and your loved ones from the swine flu. Once an outbreak occurs, it could be too late.

The good news is that the government indicates that a vaccine for swine flu may be ready by late October or early November But unfortunately, flu season generally begins in September as our children are just going back to school.
