Preventing Swine Flu – Protecting Your Family FromThis Deadly Disease

Before the year 2009, it was very uncommon for people to contract swine influenza. to get the disease, it was necessary to have some kind of contact with pigs. But, in March of the current year, all that changed. It looked like individuals infected with swine flu had no contact with pigs. The disease had undergone a serious mutation and was being transmitted person to person.

Normally, after you have had a specific type of the flu, your body retains the antibodies to kill it in the future. This gives you an immunity to the illness. But the present type of swine influenza pathogen underwent a significant mutation. This mutation appears to be a totally new type of influenza. As a consequence, nobody is immune to the illness. And that’s why government officials are quite worried regarding the possibility of a worldwide swine flu pandemic and are concerned about preventing swine flu.

During an ordinary influenza season, the influenza pathogen is transmitted thru breathing droplets. These tiny droplets enter the atmosphere when an infected individual coughs, sneezes, or breathes on you. The illness also spreads after you bit your eyes, nose, or mouth with the virus on your hands. That’s why preventing the disease is so very difficult.

In March and April 2009, lots of cases of the illness were reported in Mexico that were suspected or confirmed to be due to swine influenza. By April, over 100 deaths were attributed to the disease in Mexico and cases began to be reported within the U. S. The 1st cases came from the states of California and Texas. Since that time, reports of the illness are rapidly turning up throughout the contry.

Reports of suspected disease are also being reported in Canada, New Zealand, Spain, and many other parts of the world. Because many cases of the disease are not revealed, there are undoubtedly more infections than have been reported. And due to the fast spread of the disease, governments worldwide are concerned concerning preventing swine flu.

Causes of Swine Flu disease

The World Health Organization recently declared swine flu or what is also commonly known as H1N1 virus as a pandemic. This change in status of the disease was based on the wide spread of the disease and not the level of danger it poses to victims. The term swine flu was coined when in the initial stages of the virus spreading; several similarities were found between the symptoms of flu experienced by humans and the symptoms of flu experienced by pigs. However later studies showed that the virus associated with seasonal flu was relatively different from the virus associated with swine flu. The only similarity between the two viruses is that there are only two genes found in both viruses that are completely identical.

The transmission of the virus directly from pigs to human beings is not a very common phenomenon. In most cases when this transmission does manage to take place, the human does not necessarily suffer from swine flu. Only direct contact with surfaces of respiratory secretions that contain the virus will cause the person coming in contact with the virus to contract the disease. The live virus H1N1 needs to be transferred to the nose, mouth or even eyes for the person to contract swine flu. This virus can also be transferred if the cough and sneeze of a person suffering from swine flu manages to infect another person inhaling or swallowing his secretions.

You must be aware that the H1N1 virus that causes swine flu is rather contagious. The first cases in the United States of America were reported in Southern California and Texas. If you think that eating pig meat products will cause you swine flu then you are highly disillusioned. However the virus can be acquired just as the viruses for seasonal flu and cold are acquired under normal conditions.

How to take precautions for Swine Flu disease

The swine flu virus causes severe secondary respiratory infections and eventually spreads only in a polluted atmosphere. Thus it is known as swine flu. The virus rarely affected humans but the way the pandemic has affected men recently tells us a different story altogether. The H1N1 virus is not a swine influenza virus itself but only a derivative of the form. However, according to reports by the World Health Organization, the H1N1 strain has not yet been isolated from pigs. It is passed on pretty conveniently from human to human in the form of an unidentified mutation.

The prevention of swine influenza can be made via three ways – preventing the flu in swine, preventing the transmission of the flu to humans and preventing the spread of the virus among humans. If facility management, herd management and vaccination are executed successfully, the spread of swine influenza can be brought under severe control. Commercial swine flu vaccines are effective and available in controlling the disease. For this the virus strains have to match well so there is sufficient cross protection and custom vaccines given to animals. The transmission of the virus from pigs to man takes place chiefly at pig farms where men are in very close contact with pigs. When it was found out that such transmission between animals and man were possible, farmers were asked to make use of face masks that could help prevent such drastic diseases from taking place.

This virus however is not transmitted through sneezing and coughing only and the fact that it gets carried via food products made from pig meat is a myth. One has to take in the reminiscent of a secretion of anther who is already suffering from swine flu and that in turn will cause the former to suffer the same. The first five days of the illness are the most contagious days for anybody around that person. But children can be contagious till as long as ten days. To prevent yourself from suffering swine flu, wash your hands frequently preferably with soap and water or alcohol based sanitizers. New vaccines are being developed everyday to help fight the H1N1 virus.

Antiviral drugs help to mild the illness and comfort the patient to make him feel better if he falls sick with swine flu. The drugs should not be delayed and given immediately as soon as the virus is detected in a victim. The later you push it till, the worse the condition of the patient would get and that is not safe to risk.
